One of the most routine treatments provided by our dentist, Dr. William V. Carlo of Bankers Hill, is that of dental cleanings. In San Diego, CA, we encourage patients to have their teeth cleaned every six months, in line with the ADA recommendations (American Dental Association). Patients with certain dental conditions such as gingivitis or periodontal disease may need to see their dentist more often to monitor their oral health and wellness and provide services as needed.
What to expect during teeth cleanings near you
Patients who are looking to have their teeth cleaned may want to know more about the process. All dental cleanings are performed by the dental hygienists in our San Diego, CA practice and includes the following services:
- Tartar removal – tartar, also referred to as calculus, is plaque that has hardened and can only be removed from below and above the gum line by our dental hygienists.
- Plaque removal – sticky residue or film on the teeth is known as plaque, and it needs to be removed to avoid progression into hard to remove tartar.
Treatment of bacteria – patients who have periodontal disease, or the early stage called gingivitis, will need to have the harmful bacteria in the mouth treated with antibiotics to reduce or treat any present infections.
- Teeth polishing – plaque and stains on the teeth can also be removed during polishing of the teeth, done at the end of every cleaning to add those finishing touches!
- Home care instructions – once a patient has had their teeth cleaned by our dental hygienists and has been evaluated by our dentist, aftercare instructions are given to the patient. This information may include tips on brushing and flossing or ways to care for the smile and protect restorations and brilliantly beautiful, white teeth.
Isn’t brushing and flossing at home enough?
Patients can significantly reduce their risk of developing cavities or periodontal disease by taking care of their teeth at home, brushing and flossing after every meal if possible. However, even the most diligent brushers and flossers may still miss areas where plaque and tartar can form. Additionally, conditions such as cavities and periodontal disease need to be caught in their earliest stages to ensure effective treatment.
